Oman health training

We trained a group of 24 doctors and nurses over 4 days to prepare them to train other medical professionals about Down syndrome.

The challenge

Many doctors and nurses in Oman did not have a good understanding of Down syndrome, associated medical conditions or how to provide the best possible medical care to children with Down syndrome.

What we did

24 doctors and nurses prepared to train other medical professionals about Down syndrome.

First we worked as consultants to support Oman's Ministry of Health to develop new medical guidelines for children with Down syndrome. Then we trained a group of doctors and nurses to train other medical professionals in Oman, focusing on key areas including:

What Down syndrome is, how it can be diagnosed and associated medical conditions;
Best practices for providing health services to people with Down syndrome throughout the lifespan;
Clinical screening to identify medical conditions associated with Down syndrome as early as possible;
How to interact sensitively and effectively with people with Down syndrome and their families.

Long term impact

This project provided Oman's Ministry of Health with well written medical guidelines and a group of skilled trainers, able to train medical professionals across the country how to use them. These were the tools they needed to be able to radically transform and improve healthcare for children with Down syndrome in their country.
