Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day and challenge yourself by canoeing for four days on the mighty Zambezi river, the territory of wild crocodiles, hippos and elephants! After the canoe expedition you will return to Lusaka where you will learn how Down Syndrome International supports Zambian Down syndrome communities, and assist with group activities as well as plan, and lead, a World Down Syndrome Day celebration with the Down syndrome group.
You will be accompanied by local English-speaking guides and support staff who are first aid trained and will support you throughout your journey. You will also be accompanied throughout by a UK tour manager from the travel company, Different Travel.
No previous canoeing experience is required (although this would be a bonus) but a good level of general fitness is recommended as the days can be long and tiring. You will paddle approx. 12-28km per day on the river.
Whilst canoeing, you will camp each night on the banks of the river or on small islands. You will share 3 man tents (two to a tent) which have incorporated mosquito netting and cooking will be over a camp fire. Your last 2 nights will be spent in a lodge on a small game reserve in Lusaka.
The money you raise through sponsorship will be split equally between Down Syndrome International and Down’s Syndrome Association and will be used to support early years training projects in developing countries (including Zambia) and developing training materials in the UK.
