Cardiac consensus statement
About this project.
We worked with an international team of cardiologists (heart experts) to write a review of the recommended treatment of heart conditions in people with Down syndrome.
Why we are doing this project.
People with Down syndrome do not always get the care they need to live healthy lives. They have worse health outcomes than other people.
We believe everyone should get the healthcare they need.
This project contributes to our work on the issue of inclusive health.
What we know.
People with Down syndrome are genetically more likely than others to have some health issues. Our ‘About Down syndrome‘ pages talk about common issues in child health and adult health.
Heart conditions are more common in people with Down syndrome compared to the general population.
It is important that heart conditions are found and treated as early as possible.
What we are doing.
We worked with heart experts from around the world to write an article about heart conditions in people with Down syndrome.
The article will help health professionals to give good care to people with Down syndrome who have heart problems.
It includes best practices in diagnosis, treatment, lifelong follow-up, and prevention of complications.
“Through this work, we aim to improve standards of clinical practice, raise awareness and, ultimately, inform the development of international practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease in people with Down syndrome.”
Dr Andrew Constantine MBBS MA MRCP(UK), coauthor.
Publication!
We are very happy that the article has been published in ‘Circulation’, a world-leading cardiovascular journal with global readership.
