This is a time to raise awareness and celebrate people with Down syndrome.
This year, we are speaking up about inclusion in organisations – why it is important and how we can make it happen.
At Down Syndrome International, we believe everyone should have a say in decisions that affect them.
This means having accessible information available so we understand the decision and the choices we can make.
It also means having the opportunity to have our voice heard and what we say being valued and respected.
An inclusive organisation makes sure that the people it represents are part of its work.
People with intellectual disabilities must be included in a meaningful way and have key roles in the organisation.
They can help lead and make big decisions. They can help plan activities or projects. They can also share information in a way that everyone can understand.
This can be done with the right processes and a real wish to succeed.
Some organisations already do this well, but we can all improve.
